From the Lesson Workbook

The Flower Room

Originally this space was a hallway that led out into the garden, but I wanted to take advantage of its generous size and direct access to outside space and turn it into a flower room.

The Flower Room

  • I wanted to create a serene atmosphere in this room and made two important design choices to achieve this. Firstly, I opted for a soft sage green, which is an extremely calming colour, and secondly, I limited the palette to only sage green so that nothing else was competing or visually distracting.
  • A flower room works best when it can be directly accessed from the garden. It needs a sink to fill up water vases and watering cans, as well as a bin to dispose of trimmings from flowers and plants. You can also store all of your vases there.
  • This project had the luxury of space, and we were able to include a drapers table as a workbench for testing out different floral arrangements and floral schemes for a dining table.
  • We had the drapers table made bespoke to our measurements and requirements. If you are getting furniture made bespoke, always request samples of the materials and finishes from the makers so you can confirm it's exactly what you want.

Wall Finishes

  • I love juxtaposing different wall finishes, as we're always looking at the ways in which we can add interesting texture to the walls.
  • In this room, we decided to leave one wall as bare Cotswold stone for a rustic feel, and adding further interest by wallpapering the rest of the room in a pretty trellis.

Textiles

  • For the curtains, we opted for a small-scale pattern to contrast the larger scale of the wallpaper.
  • You always want to vary the scale within a room, as having multiple patterns in a similar scale isn't visually appealing.

Cabinetry

  • We chose a classic and traditional design for the cabinetry, with simple detailing to add subtle interest.
  • The Belfast sink has a fluted 'Apron' front, for a touch of extra charm.
  • A counter curtain hides additional shelving and storage space for flower vases.
  • Within the cupboards, there is storage for gardening equipment such as twine and secateurs as well as candles for when you want to relax outside in the evening.

Lighting

  • Wall lights above the countertop offer functional task lighting so you can clearly see while you work.
  • We decided to mix brass wall lights on one side with a zinc design on the other.

Flooring

  • Trusloe stone on the floor provides a wonderful amount of texture and character to the space.
  • It also gives an 'indoor/outdoor' feeling which works brilliantly in a room with direct access to outdoor space.

The Flower Room Scheme

  • Walls: 'Seaweed Lattice' wallpaper in Leaf Green, by Soane.
  • Curtains: 'Little Leaves' fabric in Field, Lake August.
  • Cabinetry: Chichester kitchen by Neptune painted in 'Sage' paint by Neptune.
  • Wall lights: Parkington Single Library wall light, by Visual Comfort and Kingston Wall Lantern, by Vaughn Designs.
