Masterplan and Layout

The starting point for every renovation project is deciding where each room will go and working out the best layout for optimum functionality and flow. Try to have an open-minded approach as to where a room could be best situated.

Situating the Kitchen

Early on we identified that by combining a series of smaller rooms, we could create a large, generous kitchen and dining space that would answer our clients' brief perfectly.

For me, a kitchen should be at the centre of a home. I think of it as being the centre of a wheel, with the rest of the house unfolding from there along different spokes. It is the hub of modern life, where so many activities and socialisation takes place.

Working from the Masterplan

I would encourage you to look further than the existing walls of a room and instead think of the masterplan of a building and how the layout could be rearranged to better suit your client and their lifestyle.

Ask yourself the following questions.

• How will people arrive at the home?
• How will they move through it from room to room?
• Which rooms will they use the most?
• When will the room be used, and how do you want the light to fall at these moments?
• Can you create direct access to the garden, for a closer connection to nature?
