From the Lesson Workbook

The Kitchen

Our kitchen was designed and built over 20 years ago and still looks beautiful and functions brilliantly to this day. I'll be sharing the tips and tricks for creating a timeless design.

  • The design of our kitchen is classic, giving it a timeless quality that will never go out of style.
  • While the kitchen itself remains exactly the same, we have repainted it many times to give it a fresh look over the years.
  • If you can, I would highly recommend investing in a great quality kitchen, as it will last you for decades to come.
  • Choose a limited palette of colours, and then repeat those colours throughout the house in different ways and combinations. For example, we opted for the same colour on both our hallway wall and the kitchen island; it's nice to have repetition within a design scheme, as this becomes the visual language of your home.
  • I love the glazed cabinets within my kitchen and think they look particularly beautiful when styled with glassware inside.
  • Our fridge and freezer are hidden within cabinetry for a cleaner and calmer look.
  • Next to our kitchen table, we have a dedicated breakfast dresser. This contains everything you need first thing in the morning: coffee and tea, alongside mugs, granola, nuts and seeds beside bowls, and a hamper of jams and condiments. This culminates in something that is both incredibly practical and beautiful to look at.
  • Our kitchen island houses the dishwasher and drawers for storing crockery right next to each other for the ultimate ease of use. On the other side we have all of our bins next to the sink.
  • I love having a timber floor in my kitchen and find it much more comfortable to stand on for long periods of time than a stone floor. It's easy to clean, and you can always sand it back and reseal it if you have any major spills.
  • Our worktops are in Carrara marble and are one of my favourite parts of our kitchen. It's highly practical, but you do need to be careful with lemon juice or other acidic ingredients, and any spills must be mopped up straight away to avoid staining. You can also always employ a specialist to refinish it every few years to keep it looking its best.
