Light, Colour and Details

Once we had established the layout and architecture of the space, we could move onto creating the perfect lighting scheme, as well as layering in the decorative details.

  • In a small space it's particularly important to pay close attention to lighting.
  • Our main objectives were to illuminate the art beautifully with picture lights, include manoeuvrable downlights in the ceiling so we can highlight different areas, and incorporate pendant lighting with bespoke oversized shades.
  • I like to include moments of grandeur in a lighting scheme, and in this room, the Charles Edwards lantern was one of those elements. Painted in a blue gloss paint, it helps to make the room feel modern.
  • Wall lights serve as task lights in this space, over the flower arranging sink and the dog area.
  • Discreet LED wash lights provide a subtle glow and give the space a premium feel.
  • Once the architectural structure and fitted elements were finalised, we could think about the decorative accessories: curtain treatments, fabrics, loose furniture, fireplace fender, dog bed, lamps and rustic terracotta pots.
  • At the very start of the design process, we knew we had a palette of greens and blues, but I also wanted to include a sunny yellow as an accent. We brought this in through the joinery in the dog area and the curtains at the back of the room.
  • A small but favourite detail of mine in this room is the rope moulding that we have included at the top of the tongue and groove, as well as around the room just below the ceiling height.
