Stage 3 - Developed Design

With the overall concepts established, it's time to move into design development. This can be split into two sections; the architectural elements and the decorative components.

Stage 3A - Architectural Elements

This is everything that is attached and fitted to the structure of the building. Imagine tipping a house upside down; everything that remains is what we consider to be architectural elements. Within this stage, we will tackle the following.

  • Designing the kitchen in detail, including layout and appliance choices.
  • Selecting hard finishes, such as exact tiling and handles, worktops and surfaces, flooring and paint colours.
  • Creating plans for bespoke joinery, such as for a boot room or storage within a bedroom.
  • Bathroom design, including all fixtures and fittings.

Stage 3B - Decorative Components

Everything else within a scheme, or the items that would fall out if you tipped a house upside down. This includes furniture, freestanding elements and any accessories.

  • Begin to play with fabric choices for upholstery. A client should be part of this process, and I find it best to present options along the way.
  • Other furniture, lighting, mirrors, rugs and accessories can also be decided upon.

Creating Rendered Elevations

The best way to convey all of your choices across both of these sections is to create rendered elevations for your client that bring to life all of the different elements. This helps build the story of your design and really enables the client to visualise exactly what you are planning.
