Part 5- Creating the Template
To make the template, you'll need to remove the existing cushion cover and unpick each seam.
- We'll be using the old cushion to create a template for the new cushion.
- Note down the depth of the existing cushions, as the foam you've got may be thinner or wider and your cushion cover may need to be adjusted accordingly.
- Use a Sharpie or tailor's chalk to label each part of the cushion and where it goes – this will be really helpful later when you're assembling your new cushion cover.
- It's also worth marking the edges of the box cushion all the way round, as well as each corner so you're able to keep track of its dimensions after you've unpicked it.
- Take your first cushion and use a sharp Stanley knife or seam unpicker to cut open each seam of the old cushion cover, being careful not to trim away any of the fabric.
- Once you have unpicked all the seams, you will be left with a template that you'll now use to cut out your new fabric.
- I'll only be demonstrating the seat cushion; however, the method is exactly the same for the back cushion, so each step can be repeated. They may be slightly different sizes, but the processes are exactly the same.
