Part 17- Adding the Piping

The next step, if you are including it in your design, is to attach the piping to the edge of your headboard.

  1. Before you start, it's a good idea to check that the piping you've constructed definitely fits all the way round your headboard. Remember, you do not need to apply piping onto the bottom of your headboard.
  1. To find the position for your piping, feel for the front edge of the wood and line the sewn edge of the piping along it. It's important that the piping sits at the same position all the way around the edge, otherwise it can look wobbly.
  1. Once you have the rough positioning right, insert a permanent staple along the sewn edge every 5 cm or so.
  1. When it comes to the corners, just as you did with the front fabric, you may want to make small incisions into the excess piping fabric to be able to manipulate it into tight angles – just make sure to not cut too close to the sewn line.
  1. Repeat this process around the entire edge of your headboard, apart from the bottom which will be left free of piping.
  1. To finish off the piping at the bottom corners, trim the excess so it's around 2 cm long.
  1. Use a seam unpicker to unpick the sewn line along this 2 cm length.
  1. Open up the piping fabric to reveal the piping cord and trim this so it's in line with the edge of the wood.
  1. Fold the piping fabric back on itself to create a neat edge that sits flush to the side of the headboard and secure with permanent staples.
  1. Do a final check around the entire edge of your headboard to make sure you're happy with the positioning of the piping – now is your last chance to make any amendments.
