Part 6- Using Your Template to Cut the New Fabric

You can now use the template you've made to cut out the pieces you need from the new fabric.

  1. Place your template onto your new fabric. Take your time to play around with the positioning to make sure you are using the fabric in an economical way and that the pattern will sit nicely on the final cushion. You may also want to position your borders so that the pattern runs uninterrupted from the seat section.
  1. When it comes to the borders of the box cushion, you may need to make adjustments to the width depending on the thickness of your foam – just be sure to include an 0.5 in. seam allowance either side. Once you're happy, use tailor's chalk to draw around the exact size of your template onto the new fabric. You should have a front seat, back seat and three border pieces – we will tackle the back border piece slightly differently to accommodate the zip.
  1. When it comes to the back border piece, this will need to be split down the middle horizontally, with an 0.5 in. seam allowance added to each side on each piece for your zip.
  1. Now is the time to double check all your measurements, ensuring you have the right seam allowances and are happy with the positioning of your template.
  1. Use fabric scissors to cut along the chalk lines you have drawn.
  1. Label all the pieces so you can keep track of what is meant to go where.
