How to Choose Fabric

I really enjoy sourcing the fabrics for an upholstery project – it's one of the most fun parts, and an opportunity to get really creative. I'll be running through the practical considerations too.

Tips for Fabric Sourcing

• First and foremost, think about the practicality of the fabric and the performance qualities you require. A headboard will have different usage to a chair and both will experience different levels of wear and tear.

• The Martindale (rub count) test is one way of assessing the durability of a fabric for upholstery. Most fabrics are 20,000 rub count or above. For domestic upholstery, the minimum I would recommend is 35,000.

• If your design includes a zip or has a removable cover, you may want to think about whether your fabric is washable so that you're able to clean it. Seams will need to be overlocked to prevent fraying in the washing machine.

• For fixed upholstery, stain resistant fabric is a great alternative and Linwood is a go-to brand for me.

• Sustainability is a key consideration, and natural fibres such as wool are a good choice. Scottish brand Bute Fabrics make lovely textural wools in lots of colours. You can also look out for recycled fabrics, and Camira are a great place to go for these.

• If you're thinking of going for a velvet, I would encourage you to explore patterned velvets as well as plains.

• Fire retardancy is a really important consideration when choosing fabrics. Either a fabric is inherently fire retardant, or there's a fire retardant coating added to the back. If your fabric is not fire retardant, you will need to add an additional fire retardant layer.
