Part 15- Attaching Your Seat Platform

With the seat and back prepped, you can now begin to upholster the seat platform.

  1. Mark the centrepoint of the front edge of your seat platform.
  1. Take your constructed fabric seat platform section and line up the chalked centrepoint on the fabric to the centrepoint you have just marked on the frame.
  1. Take your time to position the rest of the fabric, always keeping these centrepoints aligned. Pull just enough fabric underneath the chair so you're able to staple it in place, roughly an inch. Keep enough border fabric on the top of the seat so the liner cloth will be fully concealed by the cushion.
  1. Once you're happy with the position, secure first in the middle with a permanent staple.
  1. Work across one side and then the other, making sure it's pulled tight, smooth and straight, securing with permanent staples as you go.
  1. With the front edge now secured in place, pull the liner cloth under and through the back section, out to the back of the frame.
  1. Make sure to keep the cloth straight and pull it as tight as you can get it. You can ignore the side sections for now, so fold the excess over – the folded line can help you to ensure everything is straight.
  1. Continuing to pull with one hand and smoothing with the other, you can begin to secure with permanent staples. Be careful not to catch any of the fabric you've folded over for the side section, as this will need to be pulled under the arms a little later.
  1. Once secured all the way along, cut away any excess, then fold over the raw edge so it's double layered for extra durability and secure with permanent staples.
  1. Now you can move onto the sides. Starting with one side first, begin to pull the fabric you've folded under and around the frame of the arm.
  1. You will most likely need to make some cuts using fabric scissors to manipulate the fabric around the frame of the arm. It might be helpful to work in small sections, making incremental cuts and securing with permanent staples as you go.
  1. Once you reach the liner cloth section, pull straight and tight, securing with permanent staples. As you did with the back, cut away any excess and then fold over the raw edge so it's double layered for extra durability and secure with permanent staples.
  1. Do exactly the same process for the other side of the chair.
