Part 10- Cutting the Piping

Before doing any sewing, it's a good idea to get all the elements cut and ready. If you are adding piping to your design, you can join me as I cut out the fabric I'll be using.

  1. To calculate the amount of piping you need, use a measuring tape to measure along the exact outline of your headboard where you want the piping to go – you do not need to apply piping onto the bottom of your headboard.
  1. Lay out the fabric you're going to use to make your piping. Piping is always cut diagonally, or 'on the bias', to give more flexibility when applying around the curves of your headboard.
  1. Using a long ruler or measuring tape, mark a series of diagonal widths onto your fabric using tailor's chalk – these could simply be the width of your ruler, and no wider than 3.5 cm. To work out how many you need, divide your desired piping length by the length of your ruler and round up.
  1. It's a good idea to mark one end of each length. This will help you create a continuous look when you come to join the lengths together.
  1. Cut out your lengths of piping using fabric scissors.
