Part 6- Transferring the Shape to the Wood

Now you can use your fabric template to translate the shape of your headboard over to the plywood.

  1. Take your first sheet of plywood and lay your template out on top, lining it up against the straight edges of the wood.
  1. Use a Sharpie to carefully draw around your template onto the wood. Any straight edges that you have in your design can be marked out and drawn using a ruler to ensure accuracy.
  1. Now is the final time to make any tweaks, so triple check your measurements to ensure the design is symmetrical and stand back to make certain you are happy with it.
  1. Take the template away and cut out the shape using a jigsaw.
  1. You'll now need to cut out another piece of plywood. This will act as your frame and will provide double thickness on the edge of your headboard, as well as enough depth for your split batten to be added.
  1. Use your template to mark the outside line exactly as you did for the first sheet of plywood.
  1. Now you need to create the inside line of the frame. Measure 10–15 cm from the outside line inwards around the entire parameter of your headboard – around 12 cm is a good proportion for a double bed.
  1. Cut along both the outside line and inside line with a jigsaw to create the frame.

For instructions on how to create and install a split batten, look for instructional videos on YouTube. This one gives a great explanation:
