Part 1- Where to Begin

Learning how to make box cushions is a really fundamental and useful skill. Once you master it, you'll be able to take on a broad range of different upholstery projects.

An Introduction to Box Cushions

A box cushion has a border around it that makes it deeper than a scatter, and if filled with the right foam, makes for a very comfortable seat. They're incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways – I'm using them to transform a mid-century armchair.

You should be able to find a chair similar to the one I'm using quite easily, or you could use this technique to make cushions for a mid-century sofa, window seat or even outdoor furniture.

Choosing Fabrics

Often furniture is upholstered in plain fabrics and neutral colours to appeal to the mass market, so one of the best things about embarking on your own project is being able to choose a fabric that is exactly suited to your taste and style.

I would encourage you to explore different patterns and unusual colours, so that your finished piece feels really bespoke and unique to you.
