Part 5 - Create the Template

This is the really creative part of the project, where you can experiment with the shape and dimensions of your headboard to get it exactly right.

1. Lay out your template fabric and begin by cutting it to the exact width of your bed and the height of the board you're going to use – typically 122 cm tall.

1. If you're creating a symmetrical headboard, fold the fabric in half.

1. Using the folded edge as the centre line of your design, sketch out one half of your desired headboard shape using tailor's chalk. You can use string to help you achieve perfect curves.

1. Once you're happy, unfold the fabric and refold with your chalk design on the inside.

1. Smooth the fabric so that your chalk design transfers faintly to the other side of the fabric.

1. Go over the faint chalk line to create the other half of the design for your headboard.

1. You may want to make a few adjustments, so keep repeating this process to reach the final design.

1. Before cutting out your final design, it's a good idea to check the dimensions on both sides to make sure it's accurate and symmetrical.

1. Now, using fabric scissors, you can cut along the chalk lines to create the fabric template.

1. Once you have cut out the fabric template, fold it over one more time to check that you have cut it evenly on both sides.
