Part 12- Adding the Hessian

I would recommend replacing the hessian to increase the durability and longevity of your chair.

  1. Next, measure the frame to work out how much new hessian you need, adding 3 in. to each side.
  1. If your chair frame has a base with any kind of give in it – for example, zig zag springs or elastic webbing – then always put a pleat down the centre of your hessian to allow for a little movement.
  1. Lay the hessian over the frame, and starting at the front of your chair, create your pleat down the centre and secure in place with a permanent staple. Ensure you are giving yourself enough fabric to fold over on itself for durability.
  1. Fold over the raw edge of the hessian all the way along so it's double layered for extra durability, and secure the entire edge with permanent staples.
  1. Repeat this process along the back edge, pulling the hessian taut and ensuring your pleat is straight.
  1. Now you can move onto your sides. Again, fold the raw edge over but this time only pull a little bit so your pleat remains closed. Secure with a row of permanent staples.
  1. Repeat this process on the other side, then trim away any excess from each side.
  1. You can now replicate this on the back of your chair.
  1. If you need to work the hessian around an arm, or your frame isn't square, you can make small incisions into the edge of the fabric to help you manipulate it into place.
  1. Once it's all secured, trim away any excess.
