Before beginning your project, it's well worth taking some time to think about the design of your headboard. Consider the shape and size, as well as the materials, colours and any details you want to introduce.
Designing a headboard can be a daunting task, but there are so many places you can find inspiration. Begin by looking at Instagram, Pinterest and in magazines to see what shapes appeal to you.
Once you have decided the shape, consider any extra detailing you want to add and think about the finish you want to achieve.
Now you can also begin to factor in fabric choices and colours. A headboard is a great opportunity to explore bold colours and interesting patterns.
As it won't be subject to heavy wear, the fabric doesn't necessarily need to be that heavy duty or durable. This means you can explore fabrics with a lower rub count that might have more intricate detail, texture and even embroidery.
For any upholstery project, fire retardancy needs to be a key consideration. Don't worry if your chosen fabric isn't fire retardant, you will just need to add an extra fire retardant layer beneath.
The headboard I am showing you how to make will fix to the wall via a split batten. This means it will sit above mattress height, and we won't need to factor in a pillow stop.
