Part 9- Cutting the Fabric

Now you can use your template to cut out all the different pieces of fabric you need.

  1. Lay your fabric face side up.
  1. Take your time to play around with the positioning of your template on the fabric. You'll want to be economical, as well as considering pattern placement and pile direction.
  1. Anywhere that you have to sew must be cut exactly with the seam allowance included.
  1. For any raw edge, you'll also want to add extra length as this will help you pull the fabric more easily.
  1. I always cut my outside back pieces square as this shape allows for maximum manoeuvrability.
  1. Opting to use a cheaper fabric for the parts of your chair that won't be seen, such as the seat platform, is much more cost effective.
  1. Once you're happy with the positioning of your template on the fabric, you can mark where you need to cut with tailor's chalk and begin to start cutting with sharp fabric scissors.
  1. Make sure to replicate the markings on your template to the back of your new fabric, so you can keep track of what each piece is and where it needs to go.
  1. If you are adding piping to your chair, now is the time to cut this out and sew it to the appropriate pieces in preparation.
  1. The next step is to sew together anything that needs to be joined.
